F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix App

Designing a scalable race-weekend app for 170,000+ fans.

Role: Product Design LeadCompany / Client: Yas Events / Abu Dhabi GPTimeline: Aug–Nov 2023 (3 months)Platform(s): iOS, Android

TL;DR

  • Led the end-to-end design of the official Abu Dhabi Grand Prix app
  • Consolidated tickets, schedules, maps, and live standings into one experience
  • Used by 170,000+ attendees during race weekend

The Problem

Race weekend required fans to switch between multiple apps for tickets, schedules, and live standings—creating unnecessary friction during time-sensitive moments.

Key issues

  • Live standings were separated from the core event experience
  • Ticket access and entry flows were handled in a separate app
  • Schedules, maps, and logistics were scattered across tools

Challenges & Constraints

We had to deliver a production-ready experience in a fixed launch window—while ensuring it performed reliably during peak, time-sensitive moments like entry scans and live sessions.

Tight Timeline

Fixed 3-month delivery window tied to race launch

Legacy Replacement

Needed to replace an existing app without losing adoption

High Scale

170K+ attendees with peak usage during live sessions

Scalability Requirement

Required to be scalable beyond Abu Dhabi for future Grand Prix events

Applied Design Principles

Every screen was optimized for quick scanning, low connectivity environments, and high concurrency—so critical actions remain clear and dependable when crowds peak.

Clarity under pressure

Large type, strong hierarchy, and glanceable modules for race-day conditions.

Consistency across surfaces

Shared patterns and components across iOS/Android for predictable navigation.

Energy of the event

Motion + F1-inspired visual cues that amplify excitement without sacrificing legibility.

First, we defined the top attendee goals

We aligned stakeholders on the few tasks that matter most on race weekend—so the product could stay focused, fast, and resilient under pressure.

Seamless Ticketing

Access, manage, and share tickets easily with secure QR codes.

Plan the Weekend

Explore schedules, concerts, and fan activities in one place.

Stay Updated

Follow live standings, get reminders, and never miss a moment.

Understanding user needs

We mapped the attendee journey from arrival → entry → sessions → after-hours, identifying moments where people need answers instantly (gate access, timing changes, wayfinding, and live updates).

Building a Unified Experience

We brought the core race-weekend essentials into a single home experience—so fans could find what’s next, get where they need to be, and stay in the moment without switching apps.
